Lawmen and Lawlessness is a dramatic, narrative, account of the sheriff s of Berkeley County, South Carolina from 1882 to 1970. The first-person accounts of manhunts, shoot-outs, ruckus trials and ghastly public executions put the reader in the middle of the action. The sheriff was often the most powerful elected official in the county, thus creating frequent conflicts of interest as to how the law should be enforced. From the frontier days to the modern era, political assignations, corruption, bootlegging wars, epidemics and murder continued to plague each sheriff. Set forth in compelling fashion, this is a colloquial story of crime and justice. Trial transcripts, letters and testimony that remained hidden in local archives for almost one hundred years are made public for the first time. This era in South Carolina history is presented to the reader by two competent men of the law who know just how to put this case together. Sad at times, but truthful throughout, Lawmen and Lawlessness is an epic historical adventure.

Daniel J. Crooks is a retired state constable and professor of criminal justice. He received his bachelor's degree from the College of Charleston and completed his master's degree at the University of South Carolina. Daniel and his wife, Lynn, live on James Island in Charleston County. They have two children and two grandchildren.

Lewis, Sheriff S. Duane

Sheriff S. Duane Lewis was elected sheriff of Berkeley County, South Carolina, in 2015, and was reelected to a third term in 2022. He has a BA in criminal justice from Columbia College and is a graduate of the FBI Command College. Duane is married to Janet Rabon Lewis and has six children and one grandson.
