The majority of Miguel de Unamuno's (1864-1936) novelistic characters are obsessed with their will, but there are others who seem to exhibit little or none. However, being willful or amenable is not the same as possessing or not possessing agency, which involves the potential to achieve certain effects. This book studies the presence and absence of agency in the characters who populate Unamuno's longer fiction. The result is a revealing commentary on the pessimism inherent in Unamuno's philosophical and religious struggles.

Acerca del Autor
Thomas R. Franz is Professor Emeritus of Spanish at Ohio University, where he taught nineteenth, twentieth, and twenty-first century Spanish literature. He is the author of books on Unamuno, Galdós, Valera, Antonio Machado, and on the ecological concerns of modern Spanish literature, as well as of many articles on Spanish writers of the past one hundred and fifty years. He is a founding editor of the journal "Decimonónica," is on the editorial board of "Hispanic Studies Review," and is a member of the Advisory Board of "Cuadernos de la Cátedra Miguel de Unamuno."
