Viajes desde Appalachia Nivel I is a beginning Spanish textbook intended for use in the classroom, however independent learners will also find it to be useful. Through a scaffolded proficiency-based approach, Viajes Nivel I​ takes students from "no measurable proficiency" to at least Novice-High performance by the end of Spanish I. Tasks and assessments are proficiency-based. Proficiency-based instruction leaves students with skills that they can actually use in the future. The "end result" is that students can function in a variety of real-world scenarios to accomplish meaningful tasks. The authors grew up in and now teach in Appalachia, and understand the unique needs of rural language educators. Viajes approaches language learning through real-life scenarios and authentic materials that are relevant to rural students. Viajes and accompanying online resources (www.appviaj.es) can be used as a primary curriculum or to support already-existing language programs. Viajes task-based activities can be used for proficiency-based assessment of language skills acquired through a comprehensible input (CI) approach. Viajes follows a proficiency-based approach. Each unit includes authentic interpretive reading and listening activities. Interpersonal conversations and realistic presentational speaking and writing activities provide productive skills practice. Intercultural competencies are connected throughout the text.

Green, Chris: - Dr. Chris Anama-Green, EdD is a Spanish I teacher at Harlan County High School in Kentucky. He has a Doctor of Education degree from the University of the Cumberlands. Chris also holds a Master of Arts in Teaching degree (Spanish P-12) from Morehead State University, a Master of Public Health degree from East Carolina University, a Rank I in environmental health science from East Tennessee State University, and a bachelor's degree in biology and Spanish from Emory & Henry College. He has a TESOL certificate from Arizona State University and a certificate for teaching English Language Learners from Vanguard University. Chris lived in Mexico for two summers and has traveled extensively throughout the country. He has also spent substantial time in the Dominican Republic, Colombia, Puerto Rico, and Spain. Dr. Emmanuel Anama-Green, EdD is a Spanish II teacher at Harlan County High School in Kentucky. He earned his doctorate from the University of the Cumberlands. Emmanuel holds a Master of Arts in Teaching degree (Spanish P-12) from Morehead State University, a Master of Arts degree in Spanish Education from Southern Oregon University (via la Universidad de Guanajuato in Mexico), a bachelor's degree in Spanish and international studies from Morehead State University, and an Educational Specialist degree in Supervision from University of the Cumberlands. He also has a TEFL certificate from Máximo Nivel in Peru. He is a doctoral candidate at University of the Cumberlands. Emmanuel has traveled extensively throughout Mexico and visited Spain, Colombia, Peru, and the Dominican Republic. He previously lived in Ecuador for two and a half years.
