Acerca del Autor
Orville Brown is a graduate of Calabar High School and the University of the West Indies. He received his baccalaureate in law from the latter institution in 1974 but immediately redirected to the teaching profession to teach various combinations of history, literature and communications at high schools in Jamaica, New York and Connecticut. He has published books in communications, political science, and African-American studies, a collection of Jamaican short stories and a book to mark the 500th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation. In addition to this play he has written thirteen others to dramatise important events in Jamaican history and politics. In his political activism he served as the president of the youth-arm of the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) in 1978, the Secretary-General of the Caribbean Youth Conference (CYC) in 1984 and was a local government representative in the Parish of St. Catherine from 1981 to 1986. From 1989 to 1998 he was a speechwriter for Edward Seaga, the former Prime Minister of Jamaica and a member of the committee established by the JLP in the late nineteen eighties to prepare a statement of the beliefs, aims and objectives of the party. The play, Bustamante Part I is the first of a trilogy that will honour the memory of the man who founded the Bustmamante Industrial Trade Union (BITU) and the JLP in pursuit of his quest for the political, social, economic and cultural empowerment of the Jamaican working class. Part II and Part III will be published in 2017 and 2018, the latter year marking the 75th anniversary of the party's founding. It is the author's intention in publishing this play to increase the information available in academia for students who will trace Jamaica's journey on the path of nationhood and for the benefit of Jamaicans at home and in the diaspora who take an interest in their country's public affairs. Mr. Brown lives in New York City.
